1.   Arthur A. Benson II, lawyer for the plaintiff children in the school desegregation case, spent an afternoon last week interviewing Forgione in Washington and came away impressed.

2.   As the civil-rights movement progressed, he was repeatedly involved in desegregation cases.

3.   As the judge overseeing the federal desegregation case, Whipple has wide-ranging authority over the district, including the selection of the next superintendent.

4.   Bell defended that move, saying that ministers could not back Nixon because of his stand on the Kansas City school desegregation case.

5.   Black voters traditionally back Democrats, but many were unhappy with Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon over his role in school desegregation cases.

9.   But Benson said the desegregation case left the district with a clear direction.

10.   But even when the request to end a desegregation case comes from minority parents, as it did in Norfolk, Va., Parker said he counsels caution.
