1.   At Compaq Computer Corp., Charles Sellers has won a patent for a computer that consumes less power when it is on but not in use.

2.   Because the chips consume less power than conventional microprocessors, a computer with a Crusoe chip can theoretically run all day on one battery, according to Transmeta.

3.   Brown said Compaq had been waiting for mass production of faster Pentium chips that consume less power before putting them into the ProLineas.

4.   But they produce power in precisely the hours when air conditioners are roaring and the most power is consumed.

5.   Consumers should be encouraged to buy air-conditioners and other appliances that do more but consume less power, through incentive programs offered by the utilities.
