1.   Ice jams continued to clog rivers in northern Maine on Friday, with water backing up into towns.

2.   Thousands disappeared and bodies clogged rivers.

3.   But emergency workers using icebreakers and explosives were unable to destroy all the ice jams clogging the river and the rising waters still posed a threat to villages downstream.

4.   Hundreds of millions of tons of volcanic debris remain on its slopes and are washed down during the rainy season, clogging rivers and burying towns.

5.   Strong rains loosen parts of the debris, creating frequent avalanches and clogging rivers.
