1.   A round-the-clock effort is under way at the southern tip of Manhattan to, as much as is humanly possible, cleanse the soil.

2.   Even if there is, the salinity of the irrigated water means that farmers still need substantial rainfall to cleanse the soil and bring in a harvest.
