In any event, the cave painters left the first clear expressions of symbolic thought and a strong argument for speech as a recent development. 3. Since the days of the cave painters, art has been in the service of gods or spirits, religion, royalty, country, community and individual patrons. 4. The cave painters had a better grip on reality than much of what came later, as we began to impose our morality and order on animals. 5. They seemed to show none of the aptitude for art displayed by the cave painters who were their contemporaries and successors. 6. They became master toolmakers, cave painters and speakers of language. |
