1.   Successive attempts to name new Burundian presidents and negotiate power-sharing agreements have all been punctuated by killings by both Hutu and Tutsi extremists.

2.   Former Burundian president Pierre Buyoya was proclaimed Thursday the new head of state, replacing Sylvestre Ntibantunganya, state radio said.

3.   In a letter to Security Council president Madeleine Albright on Thursday, the Burundian president and prime minister again expressed opposition to any military intervention.

4.   Burundian former president Pierre Buyoya on Thursday called on the South African government to play a greater role in helping end ethnic conflict in Burundi.

5.   Deposed Burundian president Sylvestre Ntibantunganya, who was ousted last July, is still residing in the US embassy in Bujumbura, a State Department official said Tuesday.

6.   State radio said earlier that former Burundian president Pierre Buyoya, had been proclaimed the new head of state, replacing Sylvestre Ntibantunganya.

7.   The Burundian president made no comment, but said he would address reporters Friday.

8.   The current Burundian president was elected in September by the national assembly following a constitutional amendment.
