1.   During their research, Rios-Bustamante and his co-authors also have documented the spread and influence of Nahuatl, the roots of the Aztec language.

2.   Authorities say inmates use elaborate codes, including one based on an ancient Aztec language dialect, or write in urine on the back of innocent-looking drawings.

3.   In Nahuatl, the Aztec language, it was called Huixachatlan, or the place where thorny acacias grow.

4.   Many residents still speak the Aztec language Nahuatl among themselves and even some acts of penitence, such as whippings, also were practiced by the Aztecs.
