1.   Tensions between the Phelps Dodge Corp. and the San Carlos Apache Tribe escalated Wednesday as the mining company said armed tribal rangers threatened and harassed its employees.

2.   They were defended paramilitary style, with armed rangers in khaki patrolling barbed fences.

3.   A dozen armed rangers provided protection.

4.   Bella Ochola-Wilson, a Wildlife Service official, said visitors will be escorted to the cave by armed rangers.

5.   With aid of radio communications, the armed rangers go on their anti-poaching patrols of the game reserve on the back of specially-trained elephants.
