31.   The bridge had been closed since December after cracks were found in two of the three girders supporting a section of the northbound lanes.

32.   The northbound lanes of the highway, the major road link between Johannesburg and the east coast, were closed by the accident.

33.   Two vehicles apparently smashed into debris that was thrust into the northbound lanes, said police Officer T.L. Burnett.
