11.   Uzbek warlord, Malik Pahlawan, a former Taliban ally, reportedly ordered the massacre before he fled to Iran.

12.   As the refugees converged on the town to flee inter-ethnic massacres in their country, so did hundreds of journalists, international relief organizations and soldiers.

13.   The refugees, mainly Hutus from neighbouring Rwanda and Burundi, fled ethnic massacres in their own states.

14.   One human rights report said some clergymen apparently told people fleeing the massacres to seek refuge in churches where they would then be killed.

15.   Since fighting broke out, priests from several religious orders have attempted to protect hundreds of refugees, mainly Tutsis, fleeing massacres around the country.
