11.   The United States said it regreted that the polls did not allow selected candidates, including Kaunda, to contest the presidency.

12.   Kaunda himself was barred from contesting the presidency because he is not a second generation Zambian.

13.   So far only former foreign minister Boima Fahnbulleh has declared his intention to contest the presidency as an independent candidate.

14.   The new constitution bars former Zambian leader Kenneth Kaunda from contesting the presidency as it limits aspirants to second generation citizens.
