1. Construction of a pelvic ileal reservoirwith ileo-anal anastomosis creates a functioning neorectum out of the terminal ileum. 2. A midline laparotomy was made, the terminal ileum and rectum divided and the colon removed. 3. In an additional group of subjects, the endoscope was passed through the ileocaecal valve into the terminal ileum for perfusion of oleic acid. 4. The interdigestive cycle of motor activity, or migrating motor complex, starts from the lower oesophagus and migrates but ends in the terminal ileum. 5. The rectum, sigmoid colon, and terminal ileum seem to be particularly at risk from pelvic radiotherapy. 6. In particular, the terminal ileum seems to have an important role in the regulation of small intestinal transit. 7. Colonoscopy showed total colitis with superficial ulceration and oedematous polypoid mucosa extending into the terminal ileum. 8. Two adjacent biopsy specimens were taken from the terminal ileum, the ileocaecal valve, and from eight different sites in the colon. 9. This means that PABA-UDCA that is not hydrolysed by bacterial enzymes in the small intestine is efficiently absorbed from the terminal ileum by active transport. |
