1.   Bay Area gas prices generally run higher than other parts of the country because of a combination of reformulated fuel and limited competition among service statins.

2.   But the latest run-up has been accelerated by the scramble to introduce a new reformulated fuel in most large metropolitan areas.

3.   Engelhard said the coating can reduce ozone and poisonous carbon monoxide more than electric cars, reformulated fuels and ride-sharing do.

4.   Even so, a special Environmental Protection Agency panel is expected to recommend in late June whether MTBE should continue to be used in reformulated fuel.

5.   In California, state officials have decided recently to phase out its use in reformulated fuels sold there.
