1.   Iron deficiency anaemia is commonly caused by chronic blood loss from the gastrointestinal tract.

2.   The need to investigate the colon in outpatients referred with iron deficiency anaemia has not previously been assessed.

3.   One hundred and fourteen patients were referred for the investigation of iron deficiency anaemia.
